My work has contributed to understanding the intermeshed roles of immuno-oncology, stress responses and innate immunity, heme biology in various diseases including cancer.
My research contributed to multiple key discoveries, including:
- the discovery of cell surface biliverdin reductase and its signaling
- the identification of ATP as a pathogen-associated molecular pattern
- the discovery that cyclin A1 directly induces VEGF and MMP levels and cancer metastases
- the discovery that HO-1/CO controls DNA repair, responses to chemotherapeutics and cancer growth
- novel role of labile heme in regulation of G-quadruplex-mediated gene regulation in prostate cancer
- first description of the role of Hx, a heme scavenger, in controlling of cancer growth and GI injury
